In This Moment

by Julia Sikora

In This Moment is hitting up The Fillmore Detroit on Wednesday, November 26th to promote their latest album Black Widow, set to be released November 18th. In This Moment is lead singer Maria Brink, guitarist Chris Howorth, bassist Travis Johnson, drummer Tom Hane, and rhythm guitarist Randy Weitzel. Hailing from Albany, New York, the band has spent the majority of their career on the fringes of the rock/metalcore scene. Forming under the name Dying Star in 2005, the band quickly changed their musical direction – and name – and garnered a dedicated internet following that continues to support them today.

As with many bands that escape mainstream attention, In This Moment seems to have greatly benefitted from their under-the-radar-ness, allowing for Brink's experimentation with both screaming and clean vocals, as well as varying sounds on each of the band's four albums, beginning with the fairly generic Beautiful Tragedy, which was clearly influenced by the short-lived screamo sound of the late 2000's. The band's sophomore album The Dream was released in 2008 and featured more traditional metalcore instrumentation and only clean vocals. Two years later, with A Star-crossed Wasteland, Brink returned to screaming, and the band's music took it's first steps toward the heavier, bass-infused sound of industrial metal – a sound they perfected for their fourth album Blood. Released in 2012, Blood showed an impressive maturation, both in vocals and instrumentation, and marked the first time the band received mainstream attention.

Now, two years later, In This Moment is set to stun their listeners again with Black Widow. At this writing, four of the album's tracks have been released to Spotify and iTunes, including “Big Bad Wolf,” “Bloody Creature Poster Girl,” and “Sex Metal Barbie.” “Sick Like Me,” the first single released off Black Widow, features harsh, metallic-tinged vocals from Brink and heavy industrialized guitar and bass. Clearly following in the same musical vein as blood, it promises to impress – as does their live show.

Beginning with their appearance at Knotfest in San Bernardino in late October, In This Moment kicked off on a two-month U.S. tour to promote Black Widow. A quick glimpse at pictures from early tour dates reveals a dark and intricately crafted stage show, with Brink standing gloriously at the helm. The tour will wrap back in California in mid-December, but not before bringing Detroit to its knees. I know I'd like to be there. Trust me when I say you probably want to be there, too.
